Where are the English words?

[edit]

Where are the English words? All these words are Romanized Japanese words. The only words on this list that have been integrated into the English language and are not specifically associated with Japanese are futon, tycoon, tsunami, karaoke and tofu. All the other words are specifically associated with Japanese things. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:558:6031:4F:31CF:4D93:100A:5802 (talk) 18:28, 17 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Many people agree with you. The problem is that no one so far has been able to devise objective inclusion criteria (that do not just rely on an individual editor's opinion) so as to eliminate the clearly non-English words. 86.161.61.208 (talk) 03:12, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The criterion should be that there be some documented usage of the word, in English, not referring to anything specifically Japanese. I'm sure we could find examples along these lines of "tycoon", "honcho", "kanban", etc., and even plenty of "sushi", and fail to find any for "miso", "bunraku", etc. 69.113.154.22 (talk) 04:29, 13 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

"skosh" is also a true English word, as its form has been altered. Ulmanor (talk) 19:10, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Offjt

[edit]

This is short for "Off-job Training". How is it supposed to be a Japanese word, even if they have later adapted it into "ofujētī"? Rojomoke (talk) 08:51, 22 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's reasonable for inclusion, but under Japanese-of-English, not here. Andy Dingley (talk) 10:53, 22 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Tamagotchi

What about Tamagotchi? Stuffed cat (talk) 14:07, 9 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Tamagotchi is more like "Kleenex". It might be used to refer to similar toys of a different brand, but it's still understood as a reference to that specific brand of toys. 69.113.154.22 (talk) 04:31, 13 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
