I think it has to do w finances, and not being a for-profit enterprise. I'd really like to see alot more done as far as fundraising, and the potential is there. They generated several thousands of dollars of donations in a very short span of time last winter, when they had an outage for a couple of days. I'd like to see alot more done regarding fundraising. Glad to have you, Sam [Spade] 20:04, 6 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Tell you what, I have the account slowpoke (don't use e-mail this user as I use another account for that). Send me an e-mail at the account slow.poke+solitude with the subject test and a random number in the body, and let's see if I get it. I can do the same for you if you have an account and want to test it. Dori | Talk 14:11, Jul 14, 2004 (UTC)

I got both your emails, see if you got the one from me. Dori | Talk 16:09, Jul 14, 2004 (UTC)
Yup I received it, now I'll email you from a regular email account, maybe that is the critical factor. I tried mailing myself from my student account and that only works to the "dotted" account and not to the "dots and +". -- Solitude 16:14, 14 Jul 2004 (UTC)
To complete this discussion, me and Dori tested it several times, all the username aliases seem to work, so that section is added back rightfully. -- Solitude 16:39, 14 Jul 2004 (UTC)

POLITE NOTICE:

Please do allow me to conclude my own work before you call in the wikifairies. If the item HMS Oceanic is so in need of cleaning up, perhaps you could give me a few pointers? Faedra 15:56, 15 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Thank you for your interest in my work however, I hope you enjoy the finisherd item, and have something to add to it.

All the best. Faedra.

Hi there, I'd suggest shortening in the article and writing it in a more compact style. Currently it reads too much like prose, and not like an encyclopedic article. It was not my intention to call in the wikifairies too quickly, an article on wikipedia is never finished IMHO. May I also suggest the preview button to prevent unwanted editing. -- Solitude 16:03, 15 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Dear Solitude: Thanks for comments. I have made the item as conscise as I can at this time, if you have an interst please go ahead now and see if you can improve it as per your suggestion. I will certainly not take offence. Faedra

Latorilla

[edit]

Hello Solitude. I understand your engagement to create a nice wikipedia free of copyright violations. That is also my goal. But your deleting of the contents was too premature. I was still in the process of editing it and the supposed violations were just a guide for the final form of the article. Why this knee-jerk reactions? How can I edit now when you have summarily executed the material? Also the link to the suppossedly violated webpage is broken. I politely ask you to wait for some time before you make summary executions. Latorilla 11:23, 18 Jul 2004 (UTC)

  • I responded on your discussion page on this. When you submit material to the wikipedia, it needs to be copyright free, wether you are in the process of editing or not. You can use the 'show preview' button, or write the article in a text editor on your local pc first. If you really want to upload the article before finishing it, please use the {{inuse}} tage to explicitly let us know that you are working on it right then. The copyrighted URL's were indeed broken, my bad, but I assume you know where you took the content from. Regards. -- Solitude 11:27, 18 Jul 2004 (UTC)
By the way, you can find the original content back in the history of the copyrighted pages, if you want to rewrite the article, follow the instructions in the copyright boiler plate text. -- Solitude 11:33, 18 Jul 2004 (UTC)
  • Note that the article content is still available in the page history, for one week. However, it will be extremely difficult to remove the "taint" of the original article from the text without doing a full rewrite. Unfortunately. -- David Remahl 11:33, 18 Jul 2004 (UTC)
I can understand all your emotions here. But I also sense the tendency to knee-jerk reactions. As far as I understand, a wiki was developed for constant editing. So why explode after just few minutes of suspecting. Latorilla 11:39, 18 Jul 2004 (UTC)
  • I can sadly sense a certain air of paranoia here. Please show me that it is not true Latorilla 11:42, 18 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Not paranoia Latorilla, it is very easy to spot the copyright violations using Special:Newpages. The sooner copyright violations are found, the sooner they can be removed or rewritten. Don't underestimate the amount of rewriting needed for articles that use a large copyrighted text. -- Solitude 12:01, 18 Jul 2004 (UTC)
  • Thanks for the action. But IMO, the posting was premature. You could have contacted me first and discussed it with me. I am not a crook that must be reported right away to the proper authorities. Anyway, I have not understimated anything. If you still like to check the article of [Maitum,_Sarangani|Maitum], please do it. I am now going to rewrite the article about the tarsiers. Contrary to your probable suspicion that I cannot write my own articles, I will notify you once the tarsiers article is finished. Plagiarism is one thing, but taking information from one source and using it in another article is not considered plagiarism. As to the images, I will temporarily blank them out until I have sent to wikipedia a solid evidence of copyright permissions because you might "raise" the bars and demand such things. If you like, send me a real email address and I will send you the permissions privately. Your action was honorable and wikipedia needs people like you to maintain high quality. But the fast reaction has almost backfired. Everything around us is a compromise. Latorilla 13:33, 18 Jul 2004 (UTC)
  • If you have time, please look at Philippine_Tarsier or its temporary page. By the way kindly point me to your own full length written articles in wikipedia, I might be able to learn from your editorial style Latorilla 15:22, 18 Jul 2004 (UTC)
image rights
This issue has been cleared now. I got the permissions to publish the images. The permissions were given to me personally by the original copyright holders Jun Ramos <junram@gsc.weblinq.com> and Gene Boyd Lumawag. Latorilla 09:15, 30 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Hello Davodd, I noticed your picture promotions in the archive. Could you make sure you include the vote tallies when promoting/demoting, this makes it easier for others like me to verify the procedure. Also, I think you forgot to include promoted images on Wikipedia:Featured_pictures_visible. Just wanted to let ya know, keep up the good work, ciao! -- Solitude 09:40, 14 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Doh! Davodd 11:10, Sep 14, 2004 (UTC)

Hi. I didn't have time to promote the picture yesterday, and since Wikipedia:featured pictures has run out, there were no already-promoted ones to put in pic of the day, so I took that one knowing that someone would promote it soon enough. I made it 10 support (JediMaster16, Angela, James F., Kbh3rd, Chris 73, Stan, Janderk, Fir0002, Gaz, Neutrality), possibly 11 if you count Markalexander100, which seemed enough, particularly when we have now run out of featured pictures, but if you don't think it's enough, you didn't have to promote it. FP Archive

[edit]

Thanks for the feedback on the FP archives (and my sig). I'll see what's up with both. Do you have a specific nomination in mind that was removed? Was it removed recently? (I did add some entries that it seemed Davodd had missed when the nominations were either promoted or not-promoted (wonder if there's a better word for describing not promoting something?). I don't recall intentionally removing anything from the archives, except when I create a new archive, and then hopefully I add the older entries to the new archive, as warranted. And, I just fixed and tested my sig to add the "User:" part, thanks for alerting me to that. - [[User:Bevo|Bevo]] 15:06, 14 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I did (intentionally) move two nominations from Archive-04 to Archives-05 some time ago so that the ones using the new format could stay together. - [[User:Bevo|Bevo]] 16:40, 14 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Pic of the day

[edit]

Hi Solitude. Thanks for doing the pic of the day. The only thing I wasn't sure about is the size. Normally the image is 300px. I realised you had taken the 200px size based on the previous Thursday's one, but this had been changed from the standard because the image was very tall and just looked much too big at 300. Anyway, I didn't change it because I've been wondering for a while whether 300 was actually too big, so maybe they should all be 200 now? What do you think?

Regarding the consensus on promoting featured images, it's probably best to ask Bevo or Chris 73 as they maintain the page far more than I do.

The image I recycled that was not the oldest POTD was possibly the oldest POTD for that day since I went back in the history, not from the archive. I'm only guessing.

It's great someone else is taking an interest in updating the POTD. :)

Hinayana

I would love to follow your instruction regarding Hinayana, if I could understand what specifically you felt was NOT wikified about it!

Unfortunately the wikify message just tells me about how to put links etc. in.

There are many citations - maybe they are not formatted correctly? I am having to guess! (20040302)

Reply here. -- Solitude 09:59, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Pretty quick! "There is currently no consistent Wikipedia citation style, and citations are very poor at the moment." -Wikipedia:Cite_your_sources

This is my difficulty- the large portion of the article relies upon citations, (which have no copyright issues). As to encyclopaedic style, - it is something I am hoping for, but am yet to master.

The difficulty with the current article is that it is a heavily contested one, but primarily contested by people with little skill in English, and no idea about citing primary sources. I am struggling to keep the content NPOV, and failing (as I have a POV myself), and I know I have a tendancy to go into an essay-like style.

It would be very useful for you to take an example paragraph and to work it into some form (without changing the meaning) which is acceptable encyclopedic style. As it is, I get lost in the mediawiki manuals, much of which is contradictory.

If you cannot help - maybe you can point a finger towards someone who can? (20040302 10:12, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)) (Name = The date that I registered. 2004-03-02 My nickname is 'Mar 2'!)

That ring a bell? it was not a new page by you, you added Raul654's picture with the caption: "Dog shit". -- Solitude 13:24, Sep 28, 2004 (UTC)
Yes, it rings a bell. I discovered that page (with the photo already on it) in Recent Changes and added a speedy delete, just as I've done to countless vandalism pages over the past two years. This is the first time somebody has accused me of vandalism (or newbie stupidity) for trying to delete somebody else's vandalism.
here. -- Solitude 15:22, Sep 28, 2004 (UTC)
Don't worry about it. I looked through my contributions page and it seems like half the things I've edited don't even show up. It doesn't have any record of me editing the dog shit page at all. It may have something to do with the fact that I'm editing from a school computer, with the same IP address as about fifty other computers.
But I'm not a vandal, and if I were, I wouldn't have signed in to my account to vandalize a page, particularly one that I'm simultaneously nominating for deletion. Pyrrhos 16:38, 28 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Fixing Moussa Arafat again

[edit]

Hello Solitude,

The article Moussa Arafat was vandalized this morning, and when I attempted to revert it your last edit, the server couldn't access it. I chose to use the version right before yours, since it was working, and the article was being linked to from the front page so I thought it would be important to fix quickly. Just wanted to let you know, so your edit didn't get lost in the shuffle.

Thanks for your message re suspected copyvio for this article. I am the original author - this is a sect from a fuller piece I wrote for 'Open Mind' and 'Asylum'. Not too clear why its been pulled? Or what I can do to remedy the situation. The quoted vio is not a work I am familiar with but probably draws on the same sources. I think my piece was properly referenced so not sure why this is a vio? Thanks Jinko 13:32, 14 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hello again. Yes, thanks, just to confirm I hold the copyright to the original article as its author. I accept that the style needs further work. However, try as I might, I cant find the article I submitted to edit it? SOrry to be a pain - am new to this. How do I pull it up to work on it some more? Jinko 13:56, 14 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Aircraft pic identification

Hi! Solitude. Congratulation on Image:United Airlines aircraft taking off at Schiphol Airport.jpg, very nice. It's a Boeing 777, not an Airbus (most Airbuses have winglets on the wing tips and yours doesn't). The two things that immediately told me it was a 777 are the blade-like termination to the fuselage and the landing gear in two sets of six wheels (although your pic is exactly sideways so it looks like three) - Best Wishes - Adrian Pingstone 19:38, 18 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Code 128 edit war ?

[edit]

Goeden morgen.

In article Code 128, 2 times you removed the link to http://grandzebu.net/informatique/codbar-en/codbar.htm with the comment "(rv spam)".

I am glad that people actively remove spam.

I looked at that web page. It offers free software source code under the GPL license to generate "Code 128" bar codes (the subject of the web page).

It's relevant to the article. It offers free source code. So I don't think it is spam. (It does look a bit amateur). Why don't you like that link?

Tot ziens.

Non-commercial images

Is there a license you know of which allows commercial use 'with permission' (as opposed to just with attribution) - would that be any use? Or even just notification. I really just want to know when somebody wants to use my image for commercial purposes. Ideally I wouldnt want anybody to profit from it, but I can live with just knowing where/how its being used.

Hi Solitude. I think I'm talking to the right wikipedian. I recently went to the Melbourne Museum Insects bugs alive exhibit, and I am now pretty sure that the polyphemus moth is actually the Emperor Gum Moth (opodiphthera eucalypti). I'm really very sorry that the error occured. But the two moths are fairly similar. I was wondering if you could do the neccesary adjustments to the image name such that it wouldn't be removed from the features list, but would now have the correct name. Also I didn't bother to mention that it is a male (characterized by the feathery antlers) - should this be added aswell. If you dont want to bother with this, can you tell me how to deal with it (I'm still new and learning the ropes) Thanks in advance. Sincerly --Fir0002 10:45, 26 Oct 2004 (UTC)

By all means, remove any items that don't link to an updated article. To quote point 4 from Wikipedia:In the news section on the Main Page, "The article must be updated to reflect the new information and a have a recent date linked (but remember: Wikipedia is not a news report so relatively small news items should not be put into articles; thus those type of news items should not be displayed on the Main Page).". I think if we're going to list something on the main page, a reader clicking through should be able to actually find some relevant information there, or else Wikipedia doesn't look very good. Ideally we'd highlight articles that are very good and of timely interest, not necessarily just the top news stories of the day regardless of article quality. In any case, perhaps I shouldn't have reverted, but edited instead; Wikipedia was being painfully slow so my patience for multiple edits was wearing thin. --Delirium 17:00, Oct 26, 2004 (UTC)
