LRA

[edit]

I'm flattered you'd be willing to nominate Lord's Resistance Army. Please do. It can only get better through the critiquing process. It clearly cries out for a few pictures, and I've been kicking myself since I started editing it for not taking a personal camera along when I was in northern Uganda a few years ago. But, then again, I didn't know about Wikipedia then ...  :) Cheers, BanyanTree 19:04, 4 Jan 2005 (UTC)

the leaking small tag is by design. slightly subversive, I suppose, I preferred to have the talk-page link in smaller size and ended up thinking, why not the datestamp, too. Re the rfar, it still lacks a vote to even be heard. I suppose it will be rejected. I feel I have done more than my duty in this case, and have no wish to lurch through mediation with this character (I maintain it's not "me" vs. "him", even though he likes to play the victim. I just happened to be the one who didn't walk away in disgust, like any normal person would, in the face of his methods). regards, dab () 17:58, 8 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for commenting on French phonology and orthography. These remarks are very helpful and I will try to apply them asap. --Circeus 16:24, Jan 18, 2005 (UTC)

CFB Shilo

[edit]

Thanks for the advice Mark. I am planing on expanding the article, I'm still working out what information to add, though. I'm not really sure if I should focus on the historical aspects, the current organization/operations, or a combination of the two. Is the current status of the base suitable to an encyclopedia? I'm a bit leery about adding too much information that is subject to near-future change and obsolesence. Weaponofmassinstruction 18:13, 18 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I would say that the current state of the base is indeed suitable to an encyclopedia. Wikipedia is the only encyclopedia that allows such up to date information; it can easily be changed. Of course, the historical aspects are important as well. So I'd go for both! mark 09:22, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)

re: "hope you don't mind me adding this - thanks for the photo at Aswam Dam!"

not at all, thanks! :)
i've been more active on my local (polish) wikipedia than here, lately...
and for that reason, among others, i just forgot to add it to my wee list...

and also, "the commons overhead", as i call it, is killing me... ;)

Thanks for your interest. I originally announced on the community portal, the mailing list, the goings-on page, and the village pump. Obviously not quite everyone has heard about it yet, so I'll probably continue to advertise its existence periodically. --Michael Snow 17:17, 25 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Hi, Mark.

I think my images only occasionally come out decent, but at least I am improving :)

Since you like Corea, maybe you could tell me what other music you like? I haven't discovered anything good in a while.

Thanks a lot for the comment! -- Fredrik | talk 18:52, 25 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I like Corea most for his truly original creativity. Other artists who often give me that same feeling are Keith Jarrett and Herbie Hancock. Do you know CoreaHancock, the collaboration between (obviously) Corea and Hancock? It's a live set, both are improvising on a Steinway grand piano. Great music, you really should try that one. I should add Miles Davis as well, especially my favorite albums Someday my prince will come and Porgy and Bess.
Some other favorite artists/albums of mine (not necessecarily in any way related to Chick Corea though):
  • Grant Green (Idle Moments / Grantstand) — great, laid back soul-jazz
  • Horace Silver (Fingerpoppin' with the Horace Silver Quintet / Song for my Father)
  • Thelonious Monk (Solo Monk)
As you see, I'm mostly into jazz at the moment. Try some of these and let me know what you think if you want! Regards, mark 19:26, 25 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, I saw your reply, but didn't think of anything to say. I'll check those out. Thanks. Fredrik | talk 19:50, 30 Jan 2005 (UTC)
That's OK, take your time. It's just that I'm never completely sure if people check back to see my reply, in spite of the message at the top of my Talk :) mark 20:05, 30 Jan 2005 (UTC)
So far I've checked out Porgy and Bess, and I quite like it. Fredrik | talk 13:10, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)

As you astutely guessed, I am indeed the anon in question... - 64.81.54.23 17:27, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Greetings. I just started the Wikipedia:Image recreation requests project, and I thought you might be interested. Your help would be greatly appreciated. (I got your name from the list at Wikipedia:Wikipedians/Graphic Artists.) Best regards, – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 03:12, Jan 30, 2005 (UTC)

Do what you want with it.

[edit]

I've had enough criticism. Do what you want. I had thought I'd been helpful, evidently this was not the case. Have a nice day. - Ta bu shi da yu 22:40, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)

OK, sorry for letting off steam on your talk page. The thing is, if you feel that the template is too obtrusive, fix it! - Ta bu shi da yu 22:58, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Oh, that's OK. I can understand it. (I think I crossed your second comment here with one on your own talk page). The thing is, I'm slow because I'm not a native speaker, and I feel I can't produce nice boilerplate sentences. I could change the layout, but I think we we really need to talk it through first, with more editors, because I don't know the best way to implement this either. mark 23:13, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Cool, I understand :-) I'm just a) a little defensive, and b) not having the best time of it personally at the moment so I'm a bit snappish. Sorry that you bore the brunt, especially as you're not an English speaker! I'll try to work on the template to make it less intrusive. I really only want a note on the page pointing to the peer review subpage. Also, I've been trying to give constructive feedback on articles with no comments. - Ta bu shi da yu 23:19, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, didn't want to say that just now (feared it would sound too much like a cheap attempt to make you feel better), but I really appreciate your work on Peer Review. Thanks for the explanation, BTW — I wish you well. mark 01:12, 1 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Tuareg

[edit]

Hello Mark,

I am happy to use wikipedia, I would like to be a wikipedian. I have made some contribution related to Africa, Berber, Tuareg etc. I will continue to add more contributions on subjects I know. Now I need a help: I have uploaded an image: tagelmust (the Tuareg veil). I want to add it to Tuareg article, but I do not know how. Secondly: I want to create a Tuareg page, in Tamashek language. I need your help, if possible. Best greetings.

Ameno

Hi Ameno, you can find the ins and outs of adding images here: Wikipedia:Extended_image_syntax. Basically, it comes down to something like [[Image:tagelmust.jpg|right|thumb|The Tuareg veil]]. Then you can place that line in the article at the place where you want the picture to be shown.
As for the Tuareg page in Tamasheq, I don't know if I understand what you mean. If you mean an encyclopedia article in Tamasheq, well, the best place of course would be the Tamasheq Wikipedia, only I believe there isn't a Tamasheq Wikipedia yet. (However, you could try to ask User:Node_ue about that, since he is more into Wikipedias in other languages than I am.) In the meantime, the best place to write in Tamasheq here might be a subpage on your own userpage, since you have sort of free hand there. If you create a wikilink like this: [[User:Ameno/Tamasheq]], you can click on it and create the page.
So you speak Tamasheq? That's really cool! I may have some questions for you in the near future then :) mark 14:58, 3 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Nafaanra

[edit]

Cool, looks good. I hope I didn't edit conflict you just now when I did a little anal retentive punctuating at the References section. You seem to be working on it right now so I'll leave you to it, and copyedit a little more tomorrow if that's OK. Just as long as you check what I do! I'm far from being a linguist, and worry about introducing misunderstandings. Bishonen | Talk 20:19, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Anal-retentive. I'll review what you do, though I know you as a cautious editor. You didn't edit conflict me BTW, but it was close :). I'm mostly working on the other Senufo languages right now, so you can go right ahead if you want. mark 22:01, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Sheesh, and I thought *I* was anal-retentive! I'll fiddle with a section or two tonight, then. Bishonen | Talk 22:22, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)
:D mark

And, furthermore, Nafaanra language all over again

[edit]

Mark, I don't know if you have people around to tell you to stop fiddling with an article already—I do, or I would never ever be finished with anything. (As you saw, there are even people who will rip a half-formed article sadly lacking the Dutch dimension right out of my userspace and put it on FAC themselves—a bit extreme, that!) Anyway, take a look at your Nafaanra To do template. See it? Nafaanra language is perfect, it's done, c'mon, list it on FAC! Now! Bishonen | Talk 14:19, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Goober

[edit]

My source was the Wikipedia article on Peanut, which mentioned it. Since the Kikongo article was a stub, I simply brought the info over. A Google search reveals [1] and [2], which inform me that the Kikongo word is "nguba". – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 16:07, Feb 23, 2005 (UTC)

Culture and language in the Congo

[edit]

Hullo. Thanks for your words on my Arbitration page. I'm working on a large article on the culture of the DRC (User:Xed/draft5), and I wonder if you could look at it - if you have time. The People, language and background section in particular could do with your expertise. Feel free to edit. On a related note, I have left a question here Image_talk:African_trade_languages.png about Swahilis use in the Congo. Thanks. - XED.talk 21:17, 25 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Hi, Xed! Actually, I'm not content at all with Image:African_trade_languages.png. I made it in a rush when I was working on a rewrite of African languages and I didn't bother to check much sources. So you could very well be right — in fact, I trust your judgment. Thing is, I need reliable sources for each and every language that I want to place on the map; and additionally, I need reliable sources that tell me which languages to include. That takes a lot of time... So I'm thinking of orphaning (or even deleting) it, and do a better version when I have the time. I'll keep your comments in mind though and will certainly adjust the Swahili and Lingala areas by then.
I've put Culture of the DRC draft on my watchlist and I'll see if I can contribute something. It looks good! (Dare I say that it's good to see you countering systemic bias instead of changing personal pronouns?). Whatever. Warmest regards, mark 01:03, 27 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Sampa and Banda

[edit]

The slave market is mentioned on an official web site (sorry I don't have the URL to hand) in a context that suggests it's a tourist attraction, but I hope others will be better informed on this matter. rossb 16:34, 27 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I found the website and I saw what you mean. I assume that the slave trading took place mainly in the period when the region was along a trans-Saharan trade route. I'll have to check where that route went exactly. If I come across more extensive info I'll add it. Thanks for the clarification! mark 17:33, 27 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the vote. Maybe I should have said that my Faber edition of the poem is over 800 pages long. Filiocht 16:12, Feb 28, 2005 (UTC)

The vote is deserved. 800 pages! — that's what I mean. mark 16:20, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Oops! Sorry for stepping on your vote. --Theo (Talk) 16:36, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)

No problem! Um... did you come back to change the time of your sig from 16:35 to 16:36 for some obscure reason or (more plausible) did you edit conflict yourself? — I have that occasionally these days (the edit conflicts). Just asking because the 'You have new messages' box kept popping up. mark 17:37, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)
For reasons that escape me, my session took to double posting every transaction for a while this afternoon; not just on wikpedia so I guess that the problem was at my end. I cannot explain it or replicate it now! --Theo (Talk) 18:07, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)

You voted for Africa, this week's CSB Collaboration of the week. Please come and help it become a featured-standard article. A short list of reminders has been placed on its talk page. - BanyanTree 18:22, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)
