Dr Barratt made this claim on the BBC’s Who Do You Think You Are? series saying: “When I examined Johnny’s history I discovered a likely connection to the royal family. I’ve since established the family tree that demonstrates how. You have to go back more than 500 years to reach the point where his ancestors become royal.”
The genealogist traced Depp’s family name even further back to French Huguenot Deppes, living in 14th century England. Digging further, Dr Barratt found that on a branch of Depp’s family tree he was descended from Sir William Gascoigne and his wife Margaret Percy, who lived in 15th century Yorkshire.
Now Margaret was the daughter of the 3rd Earl of Northumberland, who was a direct descendant of King Edward III.
The late Queen Elizabeth II is the great (x17) granddaughter of the medieval monarch. And the Hollywood star’s royal link depends on an unrecorded marriage in the 1600s between Yorkshireman Richard Denton and Helen Windebank. This is the only unconfirmed branch of Depp’s family tree, linking him to Sir William Gascoigne. 2001:56A:F837:5700:F9BD:4C81:F456:C91C (talk) 16:20, 3 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
