This organization was around long before 1997. It was in existance in western Missouri in the late 70's or early 80"s. My sister told me about it when we were out eating and we saw a group of women dressed in purple and red with red hats.

What about women over 40 but under 50? Or did I miss something? -- sannse (talk) 11:01, 23 Oct 2004 (UTC)

I thought that was the white hat distro. 70.22.244.8 (talk) 07:36, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A woman under the age of 50 is considered a "pink hatter" and she wears pink hats and lavender clothing to gatherings until her 50th birthday when she's "earned" the right to wear the red and purple. It's the one "rule" that is pretty much enforced throughout the RHS

WHY does this article say that RHS is an crime organization? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Judyjetson87 (talkcontribs) 23:53, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I put back in the fact that "it is now open to women of all ages," since it seems important to me that the first paragraph establish who makes up the membership. Women from 18 on are eligible for membership in the RHS. Until they are 50, as the text later explains, they wear pink hats, but are full-fledged members. One can see from the very first question in this section that it can be a point of misunderstanding. Also, the word "originally" seems to ask for an explanation of how it is now. Where is the citation for the claim that this is the largest women's social group in the world? And why is this discussion page being used as the cheering section for the RHS? 67.160.139.209 (talk) 07:16, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wouldn't it be useful to have some indication of what the purpose of the organisation is? Being women over 50 and wearing red hats, etc., gives the membership requirement and the uniform, but what do they do? Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 20:41, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)

For so many members - The Red Hat Society is a 'playgroup' for women of a certain age. OK - so, we are all 50 or older if we are in Red Hats. Under 50 if we are in Pink hats. That's simple enough to understand. Everything else is up to us. What do we do? Whatever we want! The Society offers us various official events to attend all over North America and in the UK. But individual Chapters (alone or in conjunction with other Chapters) will have various invitational gatherings or events. Teas, Parades, Theatre visits. Some gatherings are for a few hours..some a few days. The world truly is our playground.[User: Lady Lace}

They do lunch, mostly. Sometimes tea. ;-) They are purely a social organization. As their website puts it, the only purpose is to "have fun". Jonathunder 01:49, 2005 Apr 5 (UTC)

If you want to know what they do, read the poem. It gives a pretty good idea of the sort of antisocial behaviour that they should, at any rate, be getting up to. Large, if not enormous, meals probably do come into it. -- Derek Ross | Talk 01:18, Apr 18, 2005 (UTC)

I thought I read, a few years ago, that The Red Hat Society was started in the early 1900's buy ladies of high society in Georgia or there abouts. They gathered primarily to catch up on the latest gossip while sitting for civilized tea and showing off in their finest apparel. __________________________________________________________________________

I think you have this all wrong ~ surely your concept about the Red Hat Society ~ which is, indeed, a Social Group. With the misconception that it is limited to only Women of a Certain Age ~ the Society defies gravity in many aspects. When Women ~ at and beyond the age of 50 have come to realize ~ is that we have paid our "dues" in life ~ and it is time to do for ourselves. Never with the addage that being without a life-partner means our life is over ~ and ~ since we are unwilling to be satisfied with that of being the partaker of "nurse or purse" for someone who wants just that ~ we have turned our lives around to enjoy the simple sisterhood of friendships with ladies from all walks of life ~ regardless of location or social standing ~ or what society deems is correct or incorrect.

When we don our Red Hats ~ and our Purple Attire (which depicts royalty, by the way) ~ it is to show the world that we can have fun ~ that we are related in that fun ~ that the spice of life isn't necessarily at puberty ~ or at the age of 30 ~ but that we really can enjoy all that life has to offer ~ but it can be done with gusto and with enthusiasm in our heart and lives.

Being enriched in all areas of our lives ~ we gather together in the spirit of the moment ~ whether it is to watch a play ~ shopping together ~ a lovely restaurant ~ or going on a cruise together in the spirit of the Red Hat Society ~ it is the positive reaction we get wherever we go. Our laughter can be heard around the world. The spirit of this movement is catching on in every country of the world ~ and isn't that a wonderful thing ~ to know that in groups of Red and Purple ~ we can still excite others to applaud ~ to forget whatever troubles might be in a personal life ~ and ~ for period of time ~ appreciate others in joy and friendship.

And...there is nothing wrong with that ~ as a matter of fact ~ with all that is wrong with this world ~ and all the sadness that is expanding ~ a group of ladies dressed in bling and laughing together ~ enjoying the friendship of others ~ should be looked upon as positive in all ways.

With a purpose to enjoy ourselves ~ and to do tht in such a way that comes across to others as fun...I should think that would be enough encouragement for anyone to applaud.

Wearing our colors is merely an expression ~ like placing the Exclamation Point at the end of a fun sentence. And, sliding into Home Plate yelling,

Red Hat Society

[edit]

It has offered many new friends into my life. Red hat, purple outfit, red feather boas, even purple stockings. Now could you have figured your mother ever wearing that in public. Older women coming out of the nursing home rooms to dress up and have conversation and tea with others instead of sitting around watching TV. Oh to be active again and to be accepted for our age. To have young men tell us how beautiful we all look as we walk down the street in our groups of two to twenty (or more)lifts our hearts like you cannot imagine. So hold your heads up proudly ladies. RHS inducts Terry the dolphin

[edit]

Needs citation!

On 18 August 2010, an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin named Terry was inducted into the society. The induction was performed at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, at the park's Dolphin Encounter pool. At 50, she is one of the oldest known dolphins, having lived twice the expected lifespan for a captive dolphin. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.153.205.39 (talk) 02:39, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Address of the RHS

[edit]

The Red Hat Society, Inc. 431 S. Acacia Ave. Fullerton, CA 92831 This is why I have added a California template to the article.--DThomsen8 (talk) 00:12, 25 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Verification

[edit]

The flag about failing citations is no longer necessary, as the unsourced sentence about the RHS being the largest women's social organization in the world (though probably true) has been removed, since it is a generalized item of statistics that has not been proven. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Usbeth (talkcontribs) 12:33, 16 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal for reverting to previous version

[edit]

This article is a bit of a mess and contains a lot of advertising like material and content that may have been copy/pasted from elsewhere. The worst of this could be solved if we reverted back to revision 515700399 by User:Cyphoidbomb on 2 October 2012. It still might need additional references and maybe updated a bit but it would be better than it is at the moment. If no one objects I will go ahead and revert in a week or so. Sarahj2107 (talk) 16:12, 2 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Reverted as mentioned above. Sarahj2107 (talk) 17:53, 7 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
