Pronunciation

[edit]

How is this pronounced in the US? Bark-sherr, as is the case for Berkshire in the UK? Or is the berk pronounced like the word "berk" (as opposed to "bark")? It might be a good idea to add this info. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.114.214.144 (talk) 18:32, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In America, under the influence of the spelling, Berk shy urr would be the actual pronunciation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.152.162.31 (talk) 09:29, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No, it's pronounced berk shurr — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.233.166.236 (talk) 01:56, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure who claimed that Berkshire is pronounced "Berk-shy-er" in the United States, but they probably don't come from New England (because that pronunciation is unheard of here). As a life-long New Englander who is naturally familiar with colloquial speech, I can say unequivocally that such a pronunciation is incorrect. There are two slightly different pronunciations that I have heard in widespread use in Southern New England. One is "Berk-sher", the other "Berk-sheer"; never "Berk-shy-er". —Jgcoleman (talk) 14:52, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
