There may be a negative reaction to non-English language use

[edit]

I think this page is a good thing, but I've one concern: writing in non-English languages in edit summaries and talk pages might provoke some negative reaction from Wikipedians who feel that the process of writing an English language Wikipedia should be conducted in English, for example User_talk:Emax#your_general_comments and User_talk:Emax#This_is_the_English_Wikipedia (e.g. "This is the English Wikipedia -- Please do not carry on conversations in foreign languages on Talk pages for articles. This is inappropriate and inconsiderate to your fellow editors."). Do we need to modify this page's advice at all? — Matt Crypto 15:00, 17 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I would sure be inclined to modify it. To the best of my knowledge, no other Wikipedia has a equivalent policy, and I work in about half a dozen of them. -- Jmabel | Talk 18:47, Feb 17, 2005 (UTC)
I'd understood the advice to be that non-native users either leave their comments bilingually, or leave the text that they want to add in their own language with a note (in English) asking that someone translate it. I assume that neither of those would be a problem, but perhaps the advice could be made clearer. Jmabel, as you wrote the passage in question, would you prefer to disambiguate it (as it were), or would you be happy for me to do so? Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 23:42, 17 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Go ahead. -- Jmabel | Talk 23:56, Feb 17, 2005 (UTC)
Is that OK? Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 11:11, 18 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Yes. I made one further small edit. -- Jmabel | Talk 19:25, Feb 18, 2005 (UTC)
Good idea. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 19:46, 18 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Thanks! — Matt Crypto 00:32, 21 Feb 2005 (UTC)

But how do I create an article in a different "language area" on Wiki?

[edit]

Hi, thanks a lot for this article! Maybe someone could help me with this issues: I live in Germany and am able to write articles on the German Wiki. But when I am on the en.wiki, I can't create an article... Is that normal? And if so, how can I get around this issue? Thanks so much in advance! --The writing mombie (talk) 15:01, 3 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have a question related to Wikipedia:Contributing to articles outside your native language, and am asking it at Wikipedia_talk:Editor_assistance#Getting_Checked_by_English_Native_Speakers. If you are interested, please come to the abovementioned talk page.--saebou (talk) 11:05, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
