Stalwarts

[edit]

What the hell are Stalwarts?

POV

[edit]

This is not NPOV. You need to start the article with what is notable, not with an emotion-tainted background. Also, that is the worst picture possible for him. I've just got to find a better one. Anything will do, actually.

Depeche Mode tour

[edit]

Dave Gahan is currently preparing for his worldwide Depeche Mode tour with Martin Gore and Andrew Fletcher for their upcoming new album titled "Playing the Angel" which is due for release in October 2005. For information on the album and tour visit www.depechemode.com

Please update

[edit]

Alright. The man has had flaws in his life, but please for the love of God, update it with some added cheer. Perhaps you could put that he's sold millions of records and is an amazing, sexy, solo artist with loads of talent? 7 August 2005-Cheryl [[1]] [[2]]

Christian

[edit]

My family have never converted to any other religion other than remaining within the Christian faiths. My brother did become a Greek Orthodox to enable him to be married to his wife within the Greek Church. philipgahan

jewish/not jewish

[edit]

Gahan is an IRISH NAME, from county Wexford and Wicklow. His birth name is also an old English name. Our family back ground on mothers side is east coast English counties (Essex, Herts, Suffolk, Norfolk, Lincs) going back to 1700s. On Dave's "birth fathers" side, its also East London, Essex, Herts, and other east coast English counties. There is no history of any one being of jewish faith or jewish genetics being in any part of our family. philipgahan —Preceding undated comment added 23:58, 14 January 2012 (UTC).[reply]

[edit]

Please avoid using language like "received a mixed reception from fans" or "fans seemed to take to the new sound." Unless you have done a survey or can back up what you are saying, stick with the facts. As an actual fan of Depeche Mode and an active participant on various message boards and fan group, I can say for certain that fans are diverse in their opinions and there is seldom consensus.

David Gahan's Salvation Army mother and Christian Methodist father

[edit]

In an earlier version of this article, it was mentioned that David Gahan was half Jewish, and that his Father was the Jewish parent (his biological parent). Why was it removed??? Because it was totally untrue!!!

It also said he practiced and observed many traditions of both Christianity and Judaism.

It was removed because it was inaccurate. Dave was raised within the Salvation Army Christian movement and only changed demnomination when he married Jennifer, and converted to Greek Orthodox to enable her to have a Church wedding. His birth father was a Christian and not Jewish.

Somebody with IP various addresses beginning "76" keeps claiming that his family and/or father were Jewish. I have nothing against that if it were true, but this user does not provide any reference or cite for this info. Can we please confirm that he was or was not Jewish? best, Sunil060902 (talk) 11:31, 10 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As stated before the jewish rumour is totally untrue. Im Dave's brother. Dave and my other brother and sister were raised in the Salvation Army. Dave only changed religion when he married his Greek Orthodox wife Jennifer. There has been no other change to his religion. Phil Gahan www.myspace.com/philgahan

Also, see Dave's brother Phil's comments above! best, Sunil060902 (talk) 10:19, 24 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pointless Dave Gahan rants

[edit]

It was pointless to post "Dave Gahan's Father Is Jewish"! Who the hell cares if Dave Gahan's father is Jewish? Does it really matter as long as he continues to make great music and to continue his solo career. I don't care if he's Greek Orthodox or if decides tomorrow to become a Buddhist. I could see him as a Buddhist but that is my opinion. Religion is a very personal choice.

Btw, Phil Gahan really seems like a terrific brother for Dave to have. There is alot to be said about him defending his brother on Wikipedia and all over the internet. Fans write stupid garbarge about Dave Gahan all the time. Especially this insane wikipedia rumor about him having AIDS? What kind of reject are you to accuse someone you do not know personally of having AIDS? That isn't even something you should poke a bit of fun at! Are you jealous because your former boyfriend/girlfriend had an obsession with Dave Gahan? They probably left your sorry ass.

I love Dave Gahan and I love Phil Gahan. You guys rock. -ce —Preceding unsigned comment added by Funnygurl2008 (talkcontribs) 18:11, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Gooch"?

[edit]

What exactly do we mean by "gooch" here? best, Sunil060902 14:51, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"David" Gahan

[edit]

Hi,

I think that Mr. Gahan is more well known as "Dave Gahan" by the general public. Shouldn't the article title reflect this (c.f. Bill Clinton; see Wikipedia:Naming conventions (common names) and google results)? Acegikmo1 18:16, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's his official name according to all his solo records, so I agree. I think I have redirected all references to "Dave" - if you spot any omissions hit me on my Talk page or feel free to edit yourself! best, Sunil060902 (talk) 15:59, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Comment from David Gahan's brother concerning developments of May 2009

[edit]

As there are some false stories appearing here i just want to assure you Dave isnt back on any sort of drugs whatsover, nor has he returned to alcohol. He also has not had a row with, his wife Jennifer, who is constantly by his side at this time. There is a genuine medical reason Dave isn't able to perform at the moment. Please do not ask me to divulge any further information as I will not respond to those requests.

And please dont believe the crap being printed on fan forums, i remind you these are not official forums and any offical information will be delivered either on the DM website www.depechemode.com or from the offices of the band's management or publicist. Tour staff do not KNOW any information regarding his health.

For further show information please consult the DM website www.depechemode.com for further announcements.

Please be assured that Dave is very disappointed to let you , his DM fans down, and to keep hold of your tickets for any refunds or should the shows be rescheduled, they will allow you entry to the venues.

Please respect Dave's and our family's privacy at this time. He will be back performing at a venue near you very soon.

Thanks for your understanding.

Respect always, Phil Philipgahan —Preceding undated comment added 22:32, 19 May 2009 (UTC).[reply]

Infobox: Origin

[edit]

Gahan was born in Epping, but grew up in Basildon, where he formed DM. Therefore I believe that Basildon should be in the infobox next to origin. I changed it accordingly, but it was reverted on the basis that origin should be where he was born. Can anyone clarify the infobox rules for the stated origin of a musician? Best name (talk) 13:15, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Sorry for the rush to revert but I think origin should mean just that - birthplace. For example my origin is India, even though I grew up in England since 1976! best, Sunil060902 (talk) 13:17, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Birth surname?

[edit]

So, since Dave's mother would not marry Jack Gahan until two years after his birth, his birth surname could not have been Gahan. Does anyone know what Dave's biological father, Len's surname was? That would be Dave's birth surname... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.134.39.35 (talk) 17:08, 30 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Under UK law, Dave's pre-adoption identity would be protected under the Data Protection Act without his express consent for it to be revealed. - Preceding comment added by 69.134.39.35 (talk) 21:51, 26 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Erm he wasn't adopted - his biological mother was there all the time! best, Sunil060902 (talk) 10:28, 7 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A search on Ancestry.co.uk will reveal Dave's birth name. If you're a paid-up member of Ancestry the information is freely available. Okay, you have to do a little cross-referencing with the names of biological mother and father and their marriages, and add in the names of the siblings, but I cracked it in under half an hour. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.111.150.66 (talk) 09:07, 13 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK, so what is his birth surname? best, Sunil060902 (talk) 12:58, 13 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Callcott. Best wishes —Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.111.150.66 (talk) 14:31, 13 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No mention of the name "Callcott" anywhere in the new Dave Gahan biography[3]. Real dad referred to as just "Len". best, Sunil060902 (talk) 17:47, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I've always thought that the way editors of this article came up with the name "Callcott" was OR-ish and unreliable. Sadly, now it's gone from here all over the Internet. Garik 11 (talk) 10:18, 15 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sadly that editor was me :( Should have known better than to trust an anonymous IP! But I added "Citation needed" tags in the last few days. Jonathan Miller's book "Stripped" makes the glaring error of referring to Len as "Len Gahan", both in the text and the index! best, Sunil060902 (talk) 14:47, 15 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No help from Simon Spence's new DM biography either; Dave's biological father referred to simply as Len (Ch. 4, p. 88). Haven't finished the book yet, but I doubt that Spence reveals more than that. --Sk4170 (talk) 16:35, 12 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That would be because its not an official biography and the Gahan family did not assist in the writing of the book. Phil Philipgahan —Preceding undated comment added 07:38, 13 January 2012 (UTC).[reply]

Criminal record?

[edit]

The article contains this sentence: "He was told by his probation officer to be honest with the interviewer, and as a result, he admitted his criminal record..." but there's no mention before that of the subject being convicted of a crime. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mdz (talkcontribs) 03:08, 24 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Three or four encounters with death

[edit]

The section "Health" mentions Gahan almost died four times. However, the description only describes three (1993, 1995, 1996). In the latter part, no near-death experiences are mentioned. (A gastroenteritis, although not so nice, is not that deadly) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.155.126.249 (talk) 16:28, 19 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of Birth date

[edit]

Why was his DoB removed? Wasn't Dave Gahan born? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 178.244.102.138 (talk) 08:28, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Removed it because of WP:BLPPRIMARY. @Theshape78, find a non primary source with the date and then you can change it. Philipnelson99 (talk) 22:02, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
