Please stop adding in how-to information

[edit]

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a How-to guide, the information on what to do is unnecessary, and already acknowledged in the Legacy section. 24.84.62.242 (talk) 23:15, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Uh... Still could be useful. --67.8.93.255 (talk) 21:19, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It is as useful as explaining http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:NOTHOWTO in the article itself, it is useful, but located in the wrong place. 24.84.62.242 (talk) 04:33, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I added a small summary of current events to the end of the "present day" section - some of the same information that was in the giant blob of text everyone keeps re-adding. Hopefully they can stop now. I also didn't notice that the shut-down of the Tribes 2 master servers was mentioned in 1 sentence in the Legacy section, and I mentioned it again in the part I added. Someone else can decide if you want to move what I added up to Legacy, or remove the link from Legacy, or remove only my link so we don't have 2 references doing to the same place. Splitting the Page

[edit]

I seriously think the tribes 2 page should be split, because it is becoming too long, and, it would be wise to split it up. If nobody responds within two days, I'm going to be bold and split it. --əˈnongahy ♫Look What I've Done!♫ 01:08, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Strike that, I'm going to split it when I get around to it. --əˈnongahy ♫Look What I've Done!♫ 22:49, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Don't worry about it, I did it for you. - Xatnys (talk) 03:00, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikicops are all over the split page and rightfully so. Wikipedia isn't a game-guide and the information really doesn't need to be on this page as there are numerous other websites which can be linked from this page. Xatnys (talk) 22:08, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The game is dead

[edit]

From what i hear (and can tell for myself by trying to play) the master servers were finally killed, 18th August 2007. Considering how i can no longer connect or log in, i think this has a basis in truth. Anyone care to update the article? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.107.189.47 (talk) 10:13, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

no, people are still playing happily, but numbers are starting to suffer 68.95.144.179 12:45, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

People are indeed still playing, there is a community still alive of some new members and diehards. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.186.172.186 (talk) 23:39, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Master Servers are back up as of November 20th, 2007 - Xatnys (talk) 02:59, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Legacy Miami Vehicles? Someone didnt do homework

[edit]

The Miami Vehicles portion is a current unofficial/unauthorized offshoot, if not extremely poor impersonation of "Houston Vehicles" www.houstonvehicles.com which was a Tribes2 clan started in 2000 when the game first started and is still alive and well today with over 2000 members.

Miami Vehicles copied the name, the rules, and every aspect of Houston Vehicles and is currently living off of it's legacy.

Some of this is evidenced by the year gap between houstonvehicles.com and miamivehicles.com at the way back machine at http://www.archive.org/.

Houston Vehicles is still a strong member of the tribes community and one of the oldest and largest tribes in Tribes2 and easily one of the most recognized non-competition Tribes.

Someone please correct this error, and do not let people seeking undeserved glory re-write true history.

Wikipedia shouldn't be used to trumpet a particular website anyway. I'm sanitizing the section to be more general without mentioning either side in what is apparently a bitter rivalry. -DynSkeet (talk) June 29, 2005 12:42 (UTC)

expansion

[edit]

This article is ripe for expansion. Yes, much of the specifics are very similar to Tribes, but there is still a lot of information regarding weapons, stations and packs that could be added. If no one else wants to take a hack at it, I'll get around to it eventually. -DynSkeet (talk) June 29, 2005 14:19 (UTC)

I expanded upon what I could remember of the missile launcher, mines, hand-thrown grenade types, beacons, and satchel charge. I lumped all the turrets, swappable barrels, and sensors into the "Other" category, and I hope someone will, in the future, expand upon this section. I may end up doing it myself at some point, but not right now - I'm supposed to be working!
Don't bother trying to expand this article too much with Tribes 2 specifics. There is so much encyclopedic information that can be given about the innards of Tribes 2 that it would force this page to be split into many others based on Wikipedia standards. Unfortunately though, Wikipedia also wouldn't like all the new pages being created about one game. There is such a double-standard on this website between stuff that tons of people care about and stuff that not as many people care about. The Tribes universe is the latter, so all we get is what we can neatly and succinctly fit onto this one page. All the TV shows, movies and other games that are happily spread out over several pages aren't held to the same rules as we are. Anyway, my point is: specific Tribes 2 information should be gathered on a different website entirely - like the Tribes 2 Wiki. I'd link the T2 Wiki directly in this article, but it doesn't fit Wikipedia's "External Link" requirements closely enough (not enough editors and managers). -Kryand (talk) 10:28, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

More Content

[edit]

Alrighty. I just finished adding all kinds of information about plain old base. Just all the basic stuff such as packs and weapons, as well as asset info.

I saw a few things missing about the game itself, such as how the game plays and it's features. I know all of that is located under Tribe 1's page, but I thought it was neccessary here too.

Feel free to change/edit my additions.

I guess the page could still use some info about mods such as Classic and Arena, but I don't know everything about every mod, so I'll leave that to other people.

Ya I made some minor spelling edits and I will likely be adding to the weapons/grenades and other stuff. Furthering this particular wiki page makes me smile. Pocky
I just modified the story to be more accurate - BioDerms are not aliens, they were created by humans to act as Herc pilots during the corporate wars that took place during the events of Cyberstorm and Cyberstorm 2.

Tribes also introduced deeper strategy elements to the FPS genre, including deployable items like sensors, turrets, and remote inventory stations.

[edit]

No it didn't! Tribes2 is indeed cool, but the Quake1 Team Fortress mod preceded it by years with regard to deployable turrets and inventory stations, at least... --Irrevenant 12:46, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I originally played TF, before moving onto Tribes and Tribes 2. Sure, TF played an important role in inventing these features but Tribes took them to a whole new level way beyond Team Fortress. TF simply had turrets and a inventory station (which half the time was used more as a remotely detonated bomb), but Tribes allowed a whole range of tactical deployables which were like something out of a real-time stratergy game: several deployable turrets (which could benefit from a deployed sensor network, not even TF had anything like this), inventory stations allowing defended field-bases to be set-up, a wide open battlefield (pretty much a first for an FPS), a battle overview hud allowing waypoint setting (again an FPS first), menu-based voice commands (once again a first), 64+ player servers (another FPS first) etc. etc.
Tribes 2 then improved upon and fine-tuned these features. So I think both TF and Tribes played an equally important role in the development of these features which have now become standard in many online games like Battlefield 2, Unreal Tournament 2004, etc. Canderra 20:20, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The "Base++ and Classic" section

[edit]

This section needs a bit of cleanup. While there is some useful information in there, it's very hard to get out of the rest of the information which is, frankly, irrelevant. On top of that, much of it is not up to NPOV standards. The whole thing reads like a run-on sentance or stream-of-consciousness writing, and should be reworded/rewritten to match the overall tone of the rest of the article. The same can be said of the Defense Turret section. -- Y|yukichigai 21:20, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The most unusual feature of Tribes 2

[edit]

Nobody seems to have incorporated this... it let you see your own feet! I don't know any other FPS that allowed this... 86.11.124.189 19:15, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Client-Side Mods

[edit]

I just noticed that, while there was a section about server-side modifications, there was almost no mention of the ability to modify your own HUD and add new client-side functionality through scripts. I was thinking of a section like the following to add in...

In addition to the server-side modifications, Tribes 2 also had extensive support for client-side modifications. These modifications could range from simple aesthetic or informational changes to the HUD to allowing completely new functionality. The scripting language behind these mods made it difficult to cheat (and indeed, most mods were considered "harmless"), but some questionable behaviors and functionalities were still possible. For example, one of the more controversial client-side mods released for Tribes 2 was Qing's qFireMissions. This mod allowed the user to set up a conveniently selectable system of waypoints for the purpose of long-range bombardment of enemy facilities. Once set up, the player needs only to load the appropriate "FireMission" and a series of waypoints will appear on the user's HUD, including the position the player needs stand on for the system to work. Using this mod, it was possible to set up nigh-impossible trick shots, launching Mortar shells from half the map away or more to fall through small holes in the enemy base, destroying equipment inside that was normally inaccessable without a more direct and time-consuming assault. Of the servers still active, many will ban players if they are suspsected of using this mod. Some servers have also added a small degree of randomness to the mortar's starting vector to prevent trick shots like the one above while still allowing relatively accurate long-range bombardment. Other questionable client-side mods changed the skins of mines to make them more visible, or increased the volume of sounds that an active cloak-pack made to make it easier to know when a cloaked enemy is nearby.

Thoughts? Comments? I know I may have gone a little overboard on Q-Fire, but considering its impact on the community I thought it worth expanding upon. I also was one of Qing's testers for it several months before it was released to the general public, so its a bit more memorable for me. --64.218.89.101 21:38, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, since noone has objected, I'm gonna add it and see what happens. Worst case, someone removes it, although I hope it is modified or added to to make it better. 64.218.89.102 18:06, 30 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unencyclopaedic lists & page split

[edit]

User "Combination" recently removed the list of weapons/vehicles etc. because he thought they were "listcruft". While I agree that the list doesn't belong in the main Tribes 2 article (and some of the content is probably unencyclopedic), the wide range of weapons/vehicles etc is one of the most important and notable aspects of the game.

I believe a description of the elements of gameplay is indeed interesting to anyone who is interested enough in the game to want to read its Wikipedia article. Perhaps it should be recorded (in a somewhat more encyclopaedic style) as a separate article -- "Tribes 2 Gameplay" or similar.

For this reason I have reinstated the lists, BUT added templates regarding the possibly-unencyclopaedic nature of the lists, and suggesting that the page be split.

Sounds good. Long overdue, too... I wondered why, unlke other game articles, T2 doesn't have its own seperate 'gameplay' article.

References to Ascension and RenWerX Studios

[edit]

I was directed to this article with a suggestion that I edit some of the information reguarding Ascension/RenWerX. Since Ascension is not the same game/series/story as the Tribes series, it has little to no place in this article. Except for the reference to games being built on Torque engines, Ascension/RenWerX fails to fit with the content of the article.

If the section on modifications was expanded, the Tribes 2 Renegades MOD and hence RenWerX would have some place in the article. 24.131.123.179 07:16, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Small irc change

Renwerx just switched up their irc server from irc.dynamix.com to irc.rizon.net. I made the change and switched the two since the old irc no longer is working. they mention the change here http://forums.renwerx.com/announcement.php?f=2--Djbjra 12:17, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is incorrect #renwerx is on irc.darkmyst.org players needing information on the Renegades MODs for the Tribes series can find RenWerX staff there. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.61.185.203 (talk) 04:09, 8 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

About the New Developments

[edit]

Indeed, it is pretty great that the server problems have been fixed, and how! However please keep relevent information about tribesnext in the subheading. Tribesnext may be an extremely functional way of running a tribes match but it isn't the 'only' way.

GarageGames

[edit]

It should be noted somewhere on the page that GarageGames has re-acquired the Tribes franchise and plans to re-release it as free web-based games. (See blog entries on GG's website, linked at Talk:GarageGames.) Also some explanation of the relationship of GG to Dynamix would be useful. -- SpareSimian (talk) 15:30, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup

[edit]

I just cleaned this page up, but I might have taken too much on the modding section... The problem is that it's all so tangled up with unneccesary detail that I had to strip that particular section to bare bones. If anyone can improve the mod section in a sensible way, that would contribute most to the article. Eik Corell (talk) 19:26, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm gonna sum up the problems that led to the deletion of these categories:

(Client-side Mods) : Goes into way too much detail, if it is to be added, it should be mentioned only in passing in the mods section. (Construction Mods) : A mention in passing once again, in the mod section. (Dynamix) : Rumors and speculation are not the business of Wikipedia per WP:OR (Games Inspired by Tribes 2 == : Not really sure about this section, doesn't seem that relevant to the article. (Fan Reaction) : Completely POV, not needed. (Community division) : Not relevant, the article is about the game. (Present Day) : Not relevant again. (Freeware Release) : Not relevant to the article, it's already been mentioned that the game has been re-released. (TribesNext) : WP:EL concerns. It only serves to advertise. (Ports) : WP:GAMEGUIDE concerns - It's not Wikipedia's job to tell people how to get the game to work. Eik Corell (talk) 12:02, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"TribesNext) : WP:EL concerns. It only serves to advertise.", wrong, if you read the article the tribesnext server replaced the original master server as sierra shutdown the originals, rendering the game useless for online play. Also that the tribesnext sever is not-for-profit and is completely free.TheOniLink (talk) 10:44, 9 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Stop adding TribesNext to the page. People that look at this page don't necessarily want to know anything about the game itself. You should be happy that Wikipedia doesn't just delete the page instead. 98.209.81.208 (talk) 23:10, 9 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The problem I have with this is that while its has earned its place to be mentioned, per WP:EL I doubt that it has earned the right to be directly linked to. I'll ask for a third opinion on this one. Eik Corell (talk) 23:55, 9 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
At the moment the article doesn't mention anything about the game's freeware status. --Mika1h (talk) 23:16, 10 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have restored the TribesNext section. Its mention is allowable, as per Wikipedia:V--"Self-published and questionable sources may be used as sources of information about themselves, usually in articles about themselves or their activities". The TribesNext page obviously qualifies on all counts. There is no external link except in the citations, so there should be no problem there. Please do not remove without answering this. --Jtle515 (talk) 06:29, 28 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Who currently owns Tribes 2?

[edit]

I want to start a letter writing campaign in hopes of convincing the current owners of Tribes 2 to put the game of Steam, but I can't get any clear information on who holds the rights to it. --67.58.84.81 (talk) 18:46, 28 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This isn't a place to get information on games. Try Google. -71.205.132.108 (talk) 00:26, 10 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

GarageGames owns Tribes 2, along with the rest of the Tribes franchise. I think it's unlikely that GarageGames would put Tribes 2 on Steam, because they have their own online gaming platform called InstantAction, and they probably want to keep their InstantAction games exclusive. That way, people have more of a motive to use their platform. Starsiege: Tribes is already mostly incorporated into InstantAction, but there's no word yet on what GarageGames plans on doing for Tribes 2 - if anything. I am just speculating though. The whole reason they bought the franchise in the first place is because they care about it, and the best way for them to support it would be to send it into a mainstream environment like Steam. Anyway, like I said, it's all speculation. GarageGames hasn't said anything about their plans. -Kryand (talk) 06:55, 18 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
GarageGames has put the game up for free on tribesnext.com, and is running their own master server. Silpion (talk) 20:39, 7 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This information is incorrect. tribesnext.com is a community-run solution. -71.205.132.108 (talk) 03:17, 8 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

(Copied from the AN/3RR report) I could support protecting the article if editors continue to re-insert "available servers" against not only WP:ELNO, and WP:NOTHOWTO (this coming from an admin who I don't believe has really edited any game articles, so I'm definitely 3rd opinion here - one based on policy). I could personally fully understand a mention that "third party and fan-support servers have been created to allow continued gameplay since Vivendi has discontinued support", but there should be no specific advertisements of who they are (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 14:36, 28 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I added the information with the name and general information about the fan/community built patch. Seeing as the group in question is providing the material and services free of charge, I feel this is not a advertisement, merely a source of information. There was no link to the specific location, only to a media article (which provides a dead link to the actual location) which clears WP:ELNO. I don't believe there has been another situation where fans/community provided such a development to abandoned game. Also, perusing the talk and history page suggests that there is an editor who is attempting to unduly influence the content of the article. Codesmith (talk) 21:11, 22 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
All fan communities provide material and services free of charge, this website is not unique in that sense. The above still applies: WP:ELNO and WP:NOTHOWTO. Even the existing reference is inadequate to warrant coverage, but letting that stay for the sole reason of sourcing the whole "people still play" thing could be acceptable. Unless this gets more coverage, there is no reason to disregard the aforementioned guidelines. Eik Corell (talk) 21:31, 22 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'd like to bring up two separate points in regards to this. Firstly, the creation of a fan patch to allow continued use of abandonware is basically unheard of. That in itself is certainly notable. Secondly, there still is a (rather diminished) community still playing this game. I actually just came back to it after probably five years away and was quite surprised by this fact, but there is a small very dedicated group. I would also suggest that this article could use some careful expansion, certainly in light of the games distinctive impact at the time of release, and it's continued influence on modern FPS design. Codesmith (talk) 21:56, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The AVP2 community have accomplished a similar feat, as have several MMORPGs, so it's not unheard of. Someone cannot be notable here without said notability being in accordance with WP:V. That is to say, unless reliable, third-party sources have picked up on this, it's merely editors' opinion whether something is notable for inclusion. As the guideline says: Verifiability, and not truth, is one of the fundamental requirements for inclusion in Wikipedia. This applies to both of your points: If you can find some articles that deal with the Tribes series' impact and influence on modern games, that would probably be best for the Tribes Series article. Eik Corell (talk) 13:26, 27 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Newer Developments

[edit]

Hi-Rez owns the Tribes 2 IP currently. They are supportive of community efforts to keep the game going. I ask that we are allowed to link tribesnext.com on the tribes 2 wiki page. I am asking for support from community members still active playing. Tribesnext.com has been the main website for about 10 years from which to download game files in order to meet others with full server supports. This is to help old players in finding games to join. Thanks. July 25, 2020.- Thaen999 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thaen999 (talkcontribs) 03:04, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

As far as being the main website for the game, WP:ELOFFICIAL elaborates on the status of sites like these: "No official link exists for many articles. "Fansites", including everything from websites run by fans of a musician to a charitable organization supporting patients with a disease, even if they are endorsed or authorized by the subject, are not considered official websites because the subject of the article cannot control the information being presented. Links to websites that are not considered official websites may still be justifiable under other sections of this guideline, e.g., Links to consider #4.". #4 refers to sites that fail to meet criteria for reliable sources but still has some value in that they are knowledgeable on the subject. From what I can see, the main content of tribesnext.com a forum and a some download locations for the game, and we already have an official site listed that does the same: tribesuniverse.com, which hosts an ISO of the game and a CD-key. Granted, the project is mentioned in the article, but the article where it's mentioned (here) is a stub article, barely even a mention in passing. If there was more coverage of this project and/or the site had more than it does, maybe that could qualify for mention, but as it stands now I'm having a hard time seeing it contributing much more than being a beacon to draw in new players for the project. Eik Corell (talk) 06:42, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, yes there are several download sites. However, as far as I know, those give the basic files without any patches and only LAN game functionality. Also, back in 2009 Tribesnext.com was launched after the master servers were taken down previously. The purpose was to provide a master server listing again. Hi-Rez has voiced support for it and is the current owner of Tribes 2 Intellectual property. Back in 2010 Hi-Rez Bart helped us highlight a 10-year anniversary Tournament on the Tribesnext Master server, leading up to promoting their new game, Tribes: Ascend. If we can contact the actual IP owners would it be possible to again show their willingness to support Tribesnext.com; and simply be allowed to share its link on the wikipedia page? The tribesuniverse link is not in any way related to being able to join tribesnext servers. Without any other known claimed master server lists, it would greatly help the game find more former gamers who can only join LAN games via direct IP port knowledge.
