"Haute" Savoie

[edit]

I have added a request for citation where the text mentions that the department is so named due to the high nature of the terrain. I suspect this is wrong, and a translation of Upper, rather than High for Haute is more appropriate. Given that the department Savoie contains more geographically elevated terrain than Haute-Savoie, it would therefore be more appropriate to call Savoie, Haute-Savoie. Any further comments or reference would be appreciated Sarahburge (talk) 14:51, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. The translation should be Upper Savoy, not Higher Savoy. See, for example, Free Zones of Upper Savoy and District of Gex Case (France v. Switzerland) (1932) P.C.I.J., Ser. A/B, No. 46.
CNRTL gives:
4. ... a) Domaine géographique, dans des syntagmes ... ♦ P. anal.
There is the same sense in English: Upper can either be the more elevated or the more interior part of a geographic area.
It is acceptable in English to use Haute-Savoie: Oxford Language Dictionaries Online, French to English gives "(département) la Haute-Savoie = Haute-Savoie".

It is wrong to brook this wiki page heading as "Haute-Savoie". The right wording would be the known English exynom "Upper Savoy". The aforesaid is in keeping with other nearby English exynoms/overnames such as "Upper Wallis" or "Upper Vallis". It is misleading to cherrypick by dint of an online dictionary "Haut-Savoie" at the expense of the far more known, brooked and official exynom "Upper Savoy". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.5.84.89 (talk) 16:10, 8 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Emmental cheese

[edit]

The link in the agriculture section goes to the town of Emmental and not the emmentaler cheese article here <https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emmental_(cheese)>

Problem is, I don't know how to do the html mumbo-jumbo to proper standards. I just fix typos and grammar when I see agggregious ones. DirtPriest (talk) 04:56, 14 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Done This how you do it: [[Emmental cheese|Emmental]]
