The article says that only a few present for The Miracle of the Sun saw anything unusual and that sceptics present saw nothing. I don't personally believe that a divine miracle occured in Fatima, Portugal that day, but in my searches on the net I haven't found much evidence to suggest that it didn't occur. There is, however, plenty of 'evidence' that it did, at such sites as this article at fatima.org.

Is there any documentation to support the claim that only a few claimed to have seen the miracle and that the sceptics present saw nothing? Or are we just relying on Occam's razor? -- Tlotoxl 15:14, 17 Aug 2003 (UTC)

There's a (disambiguation) page at Fatima, a page at Our Lady of Fatima, and a page at Fatima, Portugal, with a lot of duplicative material. Who knows, there may even be more pages as well. Is there any reason Our Lady of Fatima shouldn't deal with the apparitions, and Fatima, Portugal deal with the town proper, with appropriate crosslinks? -- Someone else 20:09, 17 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Wow, I didn't know there were that many pages -- I definitely agree there should be some kind of mutual linking with some 'See also's or something? Anyway, I agree that it would make sense to move all but the most basic description of the miracle at Fatima from Fatima, Portugal and move all of that to Our Lady of Fatima with appropriate redirection. Thanks for bringing up Our Lady Fatima and Fatima up. -- Tlotoxl 20:21, 17 Aug 2003 (UTC)

No prob<G>. It's hard to tell what pages we have and don't, even when "search" is working perfectly! -- Someone else 20:34, 17 Aug 2003 (UTC)

The reason why I included more information about the visions on the Fatima page is because I thought that the Our Lady of Fatima article was biased towards the topic and not in depth. I had much more information available--from a non-religous point of view. On the Net there is almost nothing available about Fatima that looks at at from a non-religious perspective. I know. I have done an extensive search. We can't take these Marian visions for granted as actual occurrences. We have to be more sceptical.Portcult 08:00, 19 Aug 2003 (UTC)~

Oh, I agree very much with your intentions, Portcult! I have also researched Fatima pretty extensively on the net when I was trying to refute a bigoted Catholic who was citing The Miracle of the Sun as proof of God and, by extension, the evil of socialism. There really isn't much information out there. I just wanted to make sure that what information we can provide is documented in some way, somewhere, and that it's not just a case of us saying, 'how well can you trust an 80 year-old poorly documented alleged miracle that was witnessed mostly by villagers with little education and probably limited capacity for skepticism?' I do think we're better off moving almost all the miracle of Fatima stuff, believer and skeptic, to another page, though. -- Tlotoxl 09:55, 19 Aug 2003 (UTC)

I have already removed the link to Fatima on the Our Lady of Fatima page and have removed all the text from my own article. There are just too many impassioned feelings about the topic to make it worth my while. I will keep what I have written on my internet site called Fatima for Agnostics.Portcult 11:59, 19 Aug 2003 (UTC)

It's curious to observe that the same person who wrote about a "bigoted Catholic" also made prejudicial remarks about "villagers with...limited capacity for skepticism." The village was only called Fatima after the apparition

[edit]

I have read and seen a documentary in which the apparition was detailed and said that the lady said her name was Fatima and that is why some people call her our lady Fatima and later that village was also called Fatima. Your article suggests the other way round, the village was called Fatima and then the apparition occured? Why would a village in Portugal be called an arabic name unless the lady who appeared there said that her name was Fatima (as also quoted by the man serving there when I visisted the place)and that could only mean one thing that she was the only daughter of Mohammad the prophet of Islam as Mary is always called Mary or Virgin/ Saint Mary. As the man in that beautiful sanctuary said, lady Fatima is the moter of us all so it doesn't matter if she was muslim or.....she was divine and holy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.39.167.199 (talk) 03:50, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Absolutely wrong. The place was named "Fatima" before this event. Also, I have read about this, and no confirmed or credible comment said that she called herself "Fatima", wherever you heard that from was spreading a rumor or lying. Also, In the 8th century Muslim armies conquered parts of Europe, including Spain and Portugal, so how is it odd for the place to have that name? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.186.136.190 (talk) 05:48, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
When the Moors conquered Spain / Andalusia, they installed their own nobility. A Muslim princess, born Fatima, converted to Christianity, and a local town was named after her: Fatima. This is recounted in the works of the 16th Century Cistercian monk, Bernardo de Brito. Thus, the town has been known as Fatima since at least the 1500s. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.165.4.155 (talk) 04:23, 22 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The meaning of the name

[edit]

"The name of the town (formerly a small village) comes from the Arabic name Fatima (Fāṭimah, Arabic: فاطمة )." That's nice. Can an Arabic scholar give us the meaning of this word? Axel (talk) 16:07, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Remove that sound!

[edit]

It is in Brazilian Portuguese! I do not want Brazilian sounds in Portugal-related articles. B.Lameira (talk) 21:13, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Re The Article on Fatima

[edit]
Francisco Marto died in 1919, and his sister Jacinta died in 1920. This article has that information in the reversed order. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.185.144.166 (talk) 00:04, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Keep this article focused on facts

[edit]

I agree with comments above that this article should be focused on the city and facts about it. There should only be a summary of events related to the apparitions here, and how these affected the village. Keep discussion of the apparitions, the Miracle of the Sun, etc. and interpretation to the article on Our Lady of Fatima. There is too much overlap, and the strongest sources are not necessarily being used here.Parkwells (talk) 16:04, 25 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
