Language

[edit]

A few language pointers to help you improve. Idiomaticity is HARD!

My English is not very good, and I want to learn it well

Better to say "My English is not very good, but I want to learn it well"

On another page you said: "THIS ARTICLE IS TOO BAD"

You'd better say, "This article is bad" or something like that. "Too" (太) or similar words are hard to translate (e.g. 你太笨: "You're so stupid", NOT "You're too stupid". English "too" is often 过分, not 太.
The real "too bad" has a different meaning--I made the mistake of saying, 太不好 instead of 太遗憾 ("Too bad"), as this is what is means.
Ciao! --Dpr 17:15, 18 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well, language, I dare say, is all about the details :)
I do appreciate your kind words. Actually, I suppose teaching someone truly is the greatest gift you can give them (for instance, Plato's cave). (Haha do you know the Chinese proverb about "teach[ing] a man to fish"?.) But every teacher is also learning as he teaches.
Learning a language often can only be done with a detail-oriented native speaker to point out mistakes. And it does also require a LOT of detailed observation on one's own part.
Frankly speaking, from a native's perspective, I think it looks/sounds a bit uncommon. You can ask other natives/teachers if you like. How would you say it in Zhongwen?
Dui. I saw your links to other Wikis so I thought you knew some Italian. Ciao is used for both Hello and Goodbye, like Hawaiian "aloha" or Korean "annyeong" (informal). Zai jian :) --Dpr 03:05, 19 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I think that's right...it's a good one!

One way "I English is not what it could be, but I want to learn it well." This phrasing is pretty native and might recomment it. As for "and" and "but"...well, "and" generally links things that are "harmonious" (so to speak), such that "My English is not so good, and I want to learn it well," does not sound like native English. You ought to use "but," because the two concepts contained in the sentence are contrasting. However, 于是 is really "so" or "therefore," as you know (among other meanings)...so maybe the most correct literal translation would be (based on my above phrasing), "I English is not what it could be, so I want to learn it well." This is really the same in meaning as the first version. Your pick.

Before I answer let me ask you a question...if you have learned the term "comfort zone," you might know my reaction :) (I'm not trying to be sarcastic at all...just, maybe Socratic, haha).

Well, hope all is well. That new Bali bombing is quite a tragedy! Talk to you later! --Dpr 07:06, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Uvo.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL-self}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited USC Fisher Museum of Art, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages USC and George Romney. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited List of most expensive paintings, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Yves Saint Laurent (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)
