Wikipedia:Requests for page protection

Page semi-protected
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Welcome—request protection of a page, file, or template here.

Before requesting, read the protection policy. Full protection is used to stop edit warring between multiple users or to prevent vandalism to high-risk templates; semi-protection and pending changes are usually used to prevent IP and new user vandalism (see the rough guide to semi-protection); and move protection is used to stop pagemove revert wars. Extended confirmed protection is used where semi-protection has proved insufficient (see the rough guide to extended confirmed protection)

After a page has been protected, it is listed in the page history and logs with a short rationale, and the article is listed on Special:Protectedpages. In the case of full protection due to edit warring, admins should not revert to specific versions of the page, except to get rid of obvious vandalism.

Request protection of a page, or increasing the protection level

Request unprotection of a page, or reducing the protection level

Request a specific edit to a protected page
Please request an edit directly on the protected page's talk page before posting here

Current requests for increase in protection level

Request protection of a page, or increasing the protection level

Place requests for new or upgrading pending changes, semi-protection, full protection, move protection, create protection, template editor protection, or upload protection at the BOTTOM of this section. Check the archive of fulfilled and denied requests or, failing that, the page history if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

    Temporary full protection: Content dispute/edit warring. — Czello (music) 16:39, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If we do that, since we usually go to full-protection for only a few days and MediaWiki does not currently allow us to layer full and semi-protections, the article would remain unprotected when the protection expires until we could reprotect it if necessary. Might 1RR be a better option? Daniel Case (talk) 04:40, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
1RR would be a decent solution as this is a CTOPs article — Czello (music) 07:09, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Temporary semi-protection: Persistent vandalism – persistent vandalism in AFD. Gauravs 51 (talk) 07:17, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Declined – Not enough recent disruptive activity to justify protection. Last was a couple of days ago. I am really loathe to protect AfDs (although I have done it) since it could be seen as tipping the process toward one side or the other. Daniel Case (talk) 21:41, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Reason: Persistent addition of unsourced content by IP addresses has continued after a previous protection. SB678 (talk) 08:17, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protected for a period of three weeks, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. Daniel Case (talk) 21:47, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Reason: Repeated edits, mostly by unregistered users, changing his nationality from Russian to Ukrainian without any discussion. [1] [2] [3] [4]

That dispute itself is covered in the article and no serious scholar considers him Ukrainian in any meaningful way. --Երևանցի talk 08:57, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Reason: Semi-protection - We have a series of IPs who're claiming SSR is still alive and being hidden by his management - a far cry from what was the case even last year but still not something supported by the sources. —Jéské Couriano v^_^v threads critiques 16:04, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Already protected by administrator Nthep. for one year. Daniel Case (talk) 03:31, 8 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Reason: I think it would be a good idea to protect this article so that users without an account cannot edit them, since for about a month there has been a user with an IP from Macedonia (the last one he used was 77.29.162.92) who is constantly being blocked because he keeps vandalizing football team articles (Málaga CF, Real Oviedo, Granada CF, Athletic Bilbao, FK Partizan, FK Voždovac, etc.) AlejandroR1990 (talk) 16:49, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protection: Persistent sockpuppetry – An editor is using multiple IP addresses to edit the page, falsely claiming that two episodes that were left unaired in the US aired. The Grand Delusion(Send a message) 18:46, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Semi-protected indefinitely. Daniel Case (talk) 04:00, 8 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection: Persistent disruptive editing – Disruptive editing on a newly released popular film, mostly by IPs (specifically from the 103.38.17.0/24 range which has already been blocked once for this [likely connected to the Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Symon Sadik). These edits disrupt the lead/ib despite Talk page consensus to the contrary. Gotitbro (talk) 20:14, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Declined – Not enough recent disruptive activity to justify protection. That range hasn't edited the article in at least a few days. Recent history shows few reverts if any. Daniel Case (talk) 04:01, 8 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection: Persistent vandalism – Persistent edit-warring from Colorado IP range Special:Contributions/2601:283:4600:7050:0:0:0:0/64, blocked once last April. Disruption also from France IPs. Binksternet (talk) 20:25, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Declined – Not enough recent disruptive activity to justify protection. Also, both times this change has been reverted, the explanations have been unhelpful and somewhat bitey (i.e., remove unsourced text when the text includes sources, and Rv edit warring when it's the second attempt to add the text). Protecting this article for a single editor making what appears to be good faith edits is not justified. Daniel Quinlan (talk) 00:42, 8 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Semi-protection: Persistent disruptive editing. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 21:44, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Declined – Not enough recent disruptive activity to justify protection. @SNUGGUMS: Please don't use this kind of edit summary. It starts off confrontational and focuses on the other editor instead of the content. Overall, it's bitey and it's no wonder the other editor made the same edit again. Daniel Quinlan (talk) 02:11, 8 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure what comes off as confrontational about pointing out inaccuracies or defiance of a hidden note that was meant to be followed. Nevertheless, this is far from the only IP who did such things, and leaving the page unprotected isn't helping matters. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 03:09, 8 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@SNUGGUMS: Starting a summary with a word like "False" reads as an attempt to shut down any discussion. Combined with "you shouldn't have ignored" and "fabricated claims", the tone feels accusatory and confrontational. These types of edit summaries are more likely to escalate disagreements (which happened) than result in a civil discussion.
By the way, I wonder whether adding a link to a talk page discussion might help with that inline comment.
As to protecting the page, only one IP editor has edited the article in the last 16 days. One person making the same edit twice isn't sufficient justification to protect an article, especially in these circumstances. The protection policy discusses the general principles involved in its lead and first section. Daniel Quinlan (talk) Daniel Quinlan (talk) 03:57, 8 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Current requests for reduction in protection level

Request unprotection of a page, or reducing the protection level

Before posting, first discuss with the protecting admin at their talk page. Post below only if you receive no reply.

    • To find out the username of the admin who protected the page click on "history" at the top of the page, then click on "View logs for this page" which is under the title of the page. The protecting admin is the username in blue before the words "protected", "changed protection level" or "pending changes". If there are a number of entries on the log page, you might find it easier to select "Protection log" or "Pending changes log" from the dropdown menu in the blue box.
    • Requests to downgrade full protection to template protection on templates and modules can be directed straight here; you do not need to ask the protecting admin first.
    • Requests for removing create protection on redlinked articles are generally assisted by having a draft version of the intended article prepared beforehand.
    • If you want to make spelling corrections or add uncontroversial information to a protected page please add {{Edit fully-protected}} to the article's talk page, along with an explanation of what you want to add to the page. If the talk page is protected please use the section below.

Check the archives if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

Current requests for edits to a protected page

Request a specific edit to a protected page
Please request an edit directly on the protected page's talk page before posting here

Ideally, requests should be made on the article talk page rather than here.

    • Unless the talk page itself is protected, you may instead add the appropriate template among {{Edit protected}}, {{Edit template-protected}}, {{Edit extended-protected}}, or {{Edit semi-protected}} to the article's talk page if you would like to make a change rather than requesting it here. Doing so will automatically place the page in the appropriate category for the request to be reviewed.
    • Where requests are made due to the editor having a conflict of interest (COI; see Wikipedia:Suggestions for COI compliance), the {{Edit COI}} template should be used.
    • Requests to move move-protected pages should be made at Wikipedia:Requested moves, not here.
    • If the discussion page and the article are both protected preventing you from making an edit request, this page is the right place to make that request. Please see the top of this page for instructions on how to post requests.
    • This page is not for continuing or starting discussions regarding content should both an article and its discussion page be protected. Please make a request only if you have a specific edit you wish to make.
