"Sir, I am a German prince." - allegedly on 12th of August 1908 in Ischl to Edward VII of England when the latter tried to dissuade him from his alliance with the German Empire, e.g. in: Walter Wiltschegg: Österreich, der "zweite deutsche Staat"?: der nationale Gedanke in der Ersten Republik, Stocker, 1992, p. 41.
The quotation was already used spelled that way in the Reichsrat on 16th of July 1907 with a very vague reference to its origin. Q: Stenographic Protocols - House of Representatives - Minutes of Sessions. House of Representatives - 14th Session of the XVIIIth Session on 16 July 1907, p. 1337 (alex.onb.ac.at)
In the spelling "Sire, I am a German prince" with direct reference to Franz Joseph ("a still living Austrian emperor"), but without reference to an event, the quotation occurs in connection with engagements of the imperial family in non-German parts of the monarchy in an article of the "Deutsches Nordmährerblatt", which was confiscated and is therefore reproduced in a parliamentary question to the Minister of Justice. Q: Stenographic Records - House of Representatives - Minutes of Sessions, House of Representatives, 331st Session of the XVIIth Session on 12 May 1905, p. 29465 (alex.onb.ac.at)
Should Consort Titles be Attributed to the List?[edit]
Even though consort titles do not exert the same level of power as suo jure rule, it's still relevant historically, as well as exerting minimal political power by establishing formal alliances, while also cementing the Habsburgs' legacy of various crowns.
